Home and Community

We live in Berkeley California, which is just across the bay from San Francisco. Berkeley is a diverse city full of open-minded socially conscious, well-educated people. Our neighborhood is near the downtown area so we often walk to many theaters, restaurants, shops and parks. Habitot is a nearby discovery Museum for young children with hands-on exhibits, drop-in art studio and events for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and families. Tilden Regional Park is a few minutes away in the Berkeley hills. The park has lots of trails and picnic spots in addition to an antique carrousel, a small lake for swimming and kid-sized steam trains. Children’s Fairyland is another favorite; this is a fun park just for kids—adults can’t enter the park if they don’t have a child with them. The local high school and 2 elementary schools (one public and one private) are within 4 blocks of our house.

We have a wide variety of tools and arts and craft supplies in our house and we spend lots of time doing small and large projects around our house and garden. We like to think of our house as an ongoing art project—we are always trying to find new ways to make it more interesting and beautiful. For most of the bigger projects, we enlist the help of George (Michaela’s dad) who makes sure what we are doing is safe. He is an engineer and very talented with tools.
